Auction Success and Prices Realized for September 23, 2017 Auction

Following an afternoon with heated bidding and much excitement, Arader Galleries' is thrilled to announce our September 23rd sale was a resounding success. The 226 lot sale totaled $1,898,124.

The sale kicked off with selections from Audubon's Birds of America, which saw the Great Horned Owl sell for $48,800, the Brown Pelican reach $61,000, and the Pileated Woodpecker achieve an impressive $158,600. The Male Turkey was the standout success of the Audubons selling for $183,000.

A frenzied and tense back and forth between three phone bidders ensued over the four Charles R. Knight original Paleontological watercolors. As the bidding continued to rise with every volley of bids, each watercolor achieved far above their high estimate, selling for $13,420, $13,420, $18,300, and $15,860 respectively.

Other highlights from the sale included two Robert Thornton engravings setting auction records for their individual image, the Quadrangular Passion Flower sold for $6,350 and the Large Flowering Sensitive Plant for $5,390. A standout in our rare book section is the Lewis & Clark's 1st English quarto edition that sold for $15,860. 

Within the selection of maps and views, the highlight was the manuscript Plan of Pittsburgh, a true treasure of American history, that achieved $158,600. The Hondius double hemisphere world map sold for $11,590 and the Thevet World Map achieved $9,272
